CHAPTER 13

R yker and his partners tied up and restrained the orcish invaders, and then Thraki and Samaya escorted them across the border. The journey to cross into Kulltanian territory was a short one indeed, as technically the inn itself, though falling on the Imperium side, hugged the borderline almost perfectly, but Thraki made sure they ventured far enough away from the inn to make it a hassle for their combatants to return.

“We'll be holding onto your weapons and armor,” Thraki said. “And we'll be leaving your hands bound, so good luck getting home functionally naked and in restraints.”

“I'm sure they'll figure their way out of the bindings soon enough,” Samaya giggled. “Oh shit, everyone's going to laugh when they see you walk into town in your underpants. I wish I could be there for it.”

“You're making a mistake, Princess Thrakiya,” Torin the trock grunted at her, looking down at the orc maiden over his shoulder. “Just come home with us. Your kingdom awaits you. Cousin Ishki misses you greatly.”

“I don't have the patience to explain it to you as well as I did for him,” Thraki sighed, rolling her eyes. “I'm getting tired of dwelling on the past. Let me just say that this is the final warning from my end. The next group that comes here will be in very real danger—I will take no pleasure in raising arms against you, but if you come here to threaten me with kidnapping a third time, I simply must defend my own honor.”

“You're making a mistake—your regent—”

Thraki's eyes slitted at her enormous cousin. “My aunt would see me dead if she could. I know things you don't. Don't let your duty blind you. Trust me, my kin, I beg you. I'm not asking for anything else.”

They fell silent after that, and soon after, Samaya and Thraki simply left them there, warning the unarmored warriors not to follow them back as though they were stray animals in search of a home.

Once Samaya and Thrak returned to the Magic Touch Inn, it was not an easy task to set their customers at ease after the battle with the orcs. Tellingly, the soldiers were even more rattled by the presence of soldiers from Kulltan than the commoners from Noblepine. It made perfect sense, they noted. The last thing any of Imperium soldiers wanted when they came here was to get involved in a potentially treaty-threatening incident.

They came out of their rooms only sparingly after that and expedited their plans to leave early the following morning. Thraki had told them everything, even explaining that it was a familial issue and that she, unfortunately, would have to recommend that they not visit too often until she was certain the attacks would not resume.

That was a source of profound embarrassment for the orc princess. What's more, making Imperium soldiers aware that she was someone meriting a kidnap attempt left her with a sour taste. She could see no other recourse but to tell them some version of the truth, though, and they predictably asked quite a few questions.
